What´s New
Remembering Ryan

All parents love to brag about their children and I’m no different. Ryan was a gorgeous, intelligent and spirited boy. On 19 December 2006, I received a call to say that Ryan had collapsed. The next 17 months in hospital proved to be a very difficult time for us both. Ryan had to undergo a very intense treatment protocol that he’d be lucky to survive. The Clown Doctors were there to ease that load... they were always ready with a fart or bum joke (his favourite). After many months of fighting his cancer, Ryan lost his battle, a few weeks before his tenth birthday. The Clown Doctors are a wonderful inspiration to us all, and please, let’s not forget those in the Foundation who work tirelessly behind the scenes. The Clown Doctors truly are caring, compassionate and dedicated to making the lives of sick children a little easier to bear. Thank you for being in our lives. Love you forever Ryan. Seriously Funny Medicine
Humour therapy is the use of humour aiming to relieve physical, emotional or psychological pain and stress. Humour is used to promote health, aid in the healing process, encourage relaxation and help improve coping with illness. It can reduce the experience of pain by increasing pain tolerance. Release of certain neurotransmitters in the brain also helps to control pain. Reduction in stress hormones and muscle relaxation as well as providing (positive) distraction also helps.

The Humour Foundation The Humour Foundation is a national charity established in 1997 to promote the health benefits of humour. Clown Doctors is the core project, and children are the focus. Clown Doctor programs are established in all major children’s hospitals around Australia and some general hospitals and hospices. Clowns have also visited east Timor and Afghanistan. LaughterWorks provides speakers and workshop presenters on humour and health to the health and welfare sector. International research has demonstrated the health benefits of humour.
Clown Doctors attend to the psycho-social needs of the hospitalised child. They parody the hospital routine to help children adapt to hospital. Clown Doctors distract children during painful or frightening procedures. They dispense doses of fun and laughter and help children forget for a moment that they are ill. Everyone benefits…patients, families and staff. Clown Doctors are highly skilled professionals and work in partnership with health professionals.
